If you live near the sea in Sussex, Worthing, Shoreham, Brighton and along the coast, you'll know that exterior paint doesn't last as long as it does inland. Salt-laden air, wind-driven rain and strong sun all attack coatings faster. The good news is that the right products and proper preparation make an enormous difference.
Why coastal paintwork fails early
Three things conspire against coastal exteriors: salt works into surfaces and draws moisture, damp gets behind coatings that can't breathe, and UV fades and degrades the paint film. A cheap coating applied over poor preparation can start peeling within a couple of winters.
Choose breathable, weather-resistant systems
For masonry and render, we use breathable masonry paints that let trapped moisture escape rather than blistering off. Modern flexible coatings also cope better with the slight movement and expansion that exposed walls go through. On exterior woodwork, fascias, soffits, windows and doors, properly primed and finished systems seal out moisture and resist the salt air.
The real secret isn't the paint, it's the prep. Washing off salt and grime, treating any algae, repairing cracks, and priming bare areas is what makes a coastal finish last. Skip it and even the best paint will fail.
Timing matters too
Coastal exteriors are best painted in dry, settled spells from late spring to early autumn, so coatings can cure fully before damp weather returns. We always plan exterior work around the forecast.
How often will I need to repaint?
Inland masonry can go a decade or more between repaints. On an exposed coastal wall, expect to review it sooner, though good preparation and the right system stretch that out considerably. Catching small failures early (a touch-up here, a repair there) is far cheaper than letting water get behind the coating.
