What affects the cost of exterior painting
- Size and height of the property. A two storey detached house takes longer, and needs more access equipment, than a small bungalow.
- The surface. Smooth render, pebbledash, brick and timber all behave differently and use different amounts of paint.
- Condition and preparation. Flaking paint, cracked render, algae and bare timber all add preparation time, which is the biggest single cost in any exterior job.
- Access. High gable ends, conservatories in the way and awkward ground all affect how long the work takes.
- Paint choice. Premium, longer lasting coatings cost more per tin but can be well worth it on an exposed Sussex property.

As a general guide, a small house with sound walls sits at the lower end, while a large period property needing significant preparation sits considerably higher.
